Ka Hale Hoaka

Hānai Kumu translates to mean; to nourish, sustain, and provide care for teachers. This workshop will strengthen teacher/student relationships and offer a cultural orientation that is both effective and ethical. It will empower Hawaiʻi educators with the knowledge and skills to create experiences for haumāna students to become active agents within their learning spaces and create an environment that is empathetic to Kanaka Maoli students.  Through aloha ʻāina love for the ʻāina land and lāhui the Hawaiian Kingdom, educators will be ready to guide students by applying Hawaiian culture and traditional concepts to everyday practices to create a stronger sense of self, place, and kuleana. 

Educators will explore various pedagogies of Hawaiian teaching such as ʻŌlelo Noʻeau  Proverbs, Moʻolelo Storytelling, Mele Song, Hula Dance, Oli Chant, Hana Noʻeau Hawaiian cultural arts, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Hawaiian language.  The practice of aloha ʻāina will be strengthened by establishing a better relationship with the things that connect to home. As teachers become more immersed they will also take a closer look at the power of lawena cultural behavioral expectations, and what that looks like.  Throughout this immersive process, kumu will learn ways to bring ʻĀina based learning into their classroom and also outside with the ʻāina. Educators will be guided through a process to aid with the conceptualizing or producing of a final product from any of the aforementioned pedagogies to strengthen their learning environment.
